Wu Lien-teh was a famous doctor. He was born in Penang. This is part of Malaysia today. He studied at a school in England. He was the first Chinese student to study at Cambridge University.

In 1910, a bad sickness called the plague hit Manchuria. Wu went there to study it. He found that the sickness spread through the air. To help people, he made a new mask. It used layers of gauze and cotton to filter the air. This mask was the start of the N95 masks we use today.

Wu also found new ways to stop the sickness. He asked to use cremation. This is when bodies are burned with fire. In the cold winter, the ground was frozen. It was too hard to bury people. After he started using fire, the sickness began to go away. Within months, the plague was gone.

Wu was a great leader in health. He helped start the Chinese Medical Association. He also worked to stop cholera. Many people honor him today. You can even see his face on a Google Doodle.
