Wu Lien-teh was a very important doctor who helped save many lives. He was born in 1879 in Penang, which is in Malaysia today. His father was a goldsmith from China, and his mother was from a local group called the Peranakan. Wu was a very bright student during his school years. He won a special scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge in England. He was the first medical student of Chinese descent to go there. This was a huge achievement for him and his family.

In 1910, a very serious sickness called the pneumonic plague hit Manchuria. This disease was very dangerous and killed many people. Wu traveled to Harbin to find out how it worked. He performed an autopsy, which is a medical exam on a body, to learn more. He discovered that the sickness spread through the air. To stop this, he invented a special mask. He used layers of gauze and cotton to filter the air. This mask was the early version of the N95 masks we use today.

Wu also found new ways to stop the sickness from spreading. The ground in Manchuria was frozen solid during the winter. This made it very hard to bury the people who had died. Wu asked for permission to use cremation instead. Cremation is when a body is burned with fire. This was a very important turning point for the area. Just days after this started, the number of sick people began to drop. Within a few months, the plague was gone.

Throughout his life, Wu did many important jobs in medicine. He was the first director of the Manchurian Plague Service in 1912. He also helped start the Chinese Medical Association in 1916. Later, he became the first director of the National Quarantine Service in the 1930s. He even worked to fight a different sickness called cholera. He was a leader who helped modernize how China handled health. Many countries gave him awards for his hard work.

Today, people all over the world remember Wu Lien-teh for his discoveries. You can find roads and even whole neighborhoods named after him. In 2021, Google even made a special Doodle to celebrate his life. His work became very important again during the COVID-19 pandemic. Scientists still look at the ways he used masks and quarantine to help people. He showed us how science can be used to protect everyone. His story is a great example of how one person can make a difference.
