Pyotr Kapitsa was a famous Russian physicist.

He spent his life studying how things act at very low temperatures. This field is called low-temperature physics. His work helped us understand how matter behaves when it is extremely cold. He was a very important leader in the world of science. He even won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his big discoveries.

One of his most amazing finds was something called superfluidity. In 1937, he discovered that liquid helium-4 could become a superfluid. This happens when the liquid is cooled below 1.8 K. A superfluid is a special state of matter. It has no measurable viscosity, which means it has no friction. Because there is no friction, the liquid can flow very easily. This discovery was a huge step for science.

Kapitsa had a very interesting life journey. He was born in Kronstadt in the Russian Empire. He studied at the Petrograd Polytechnical Institute and graduated in 1918. Later, he moved to Britain to work at the University of Cambridge. He worked with a scientist named Ernest Rutherford for over ten years. In 1934, he went back to Russia. The Soviet Union did not let him travel back to Great Britain after that.

He made many important discoveries using different tools. In the 1920s, he made ways to create very strong magnetic fields. In 1934, he built new machines to make liquid helium. During World War II, he worked on ways to turn air into liquid. He also invented high power microwave generators between 1950 and 1955. He even found a type of plasma that was over 1,000,000 K. These inventions were very useful for many different jobs.

Kapitsa's name is still remembered today in many ways. He helped start the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He was a member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences for a long time. In 1978, he shared the Nobel Prize with two other scientists. Even space honors him with a special name. A small planet is named 3437 Kapitsa.
