Lev Landau was one of the most important scientists of the twentieth century.

He was a Soviet physicist who understood almost every part of physics. Many people call him a universal scientist because he knew so much about many different topics. He helped create the foundation for condensed matter physics, which is the study of how small parts of matter work together. His work was so important that it changed how we understand the physical world.

Landau's work often involved using math to explain how nature behaves. He helped find the density matrix method, which is a way to describe quantum mechanics. He also created a theory for superfluidity, which is how some liquids move without any friction. This happens when liquid helium II is kept at a temperature below 2.17 K, or about -270.98 °C. He also worked on many other ideas, like the theory of Fermi liquids and the Ginzburg–Landau theory of superconductivity. These theories help scientists understand how electricity and heat move through materials.

Landau was born in Baku on 22 January 1908.

He was a math genius from a very young age. He learned differential calculus at age 12 and integral calculus at age 13. He graduated from his school at only 13 years old. In 1922, at age 14, he started studying at Baku State University. He studied both physics and mathematics, as well as chemistry, at the same time. Later, he moved to Leningrad to study theoretical physics more deeply.

Throughout his life, Landau reached many great heights in science. In 1962, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on superfluidity.

He also led a famous group of scientists known as the "Landau school" in Kharkov. He created a very difficult exam called the "Theoretical Minimum" for his students. Between 1934 and 1961, only 43 people were able to pass this test. He also helped with important projects involving atomic science. He received the Stalin Prize in 1949 and 1953 for his work.

Landau's life was not always easy or simple. In 1938, he was arrested by the government for having a leaflet. He was released in 1939 after other famous scientists wrote to the leader, Joseph Stalin. In 1962, a car accident caused him a serious brain injury.

He spent two months in a coma after the crash. Although he recovered, he could not do his creative scientific work like before. This accident prevented him from accepting his Nobel Prize in person. He died on 1 April 1968, at the age of 60.
