Ilya Frank was a very important physicist from the Soviet Union.

He spent his life studying how the tiny parts of our world work. His work helped scientists understand light and fast particles. This knowledge is still used in science today. He even won one of the highest honors in science. This honor is called the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Frank discovered a special way that light is made. He studied something called Cherenkov radiation. This happens when charged particles move through a clear material like water. The particles must move faster than light can move in that water. When they do this, they create a shock wave in the electromagnetic field. This process makes a glow of light. Scientists use a math rule called the Frank–Tamm formula to explain it.

Ilya Frank was born on 23 October 1908 in St. Petersburg. His father, Mikhail, was a talented mathematician. His mother, Yelizaveta, was a doctor. Ilya studied math and physics at Moscow State University. He worked with a mentor named Sergey Vavilov.

His work led to many big awards and jobs. He won a Stalin Prize in 1946 and again in 1953. In 1971, he received the USSR State Prize. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1958 with Pavel Cherenkov and Igor Tamm.

Frank also led a large laboratory of neutron physics. He worked with nuclear reactors and studied how neutrons move. This helped people learn more about nuclear physics.

We can see his work in many places today. The light he studied helps doctors in medical research. It helps them find radioactive isotopes in the body. His discovery also helps scientists measure how fast particles travel. Even his son, Alexander, became a physicist to follow his father's path. Ilya Frank lived a long and busy life. He died in Moscow on 22 June 1990 at the age of 81.
