Charcot found many new ways to describe sicknesses. He was the first to describe multiple sclerosis. This is a disease that affects the body. He also studied Parkinson's disease. He helped people understand the difference between being weak and being stiff. Charcot also studied hypnosis. Hypnosis is a way to make someone very focused. He studied how hypnosis worked with a condition called hysteria. At first, he thought hysteria was a nerve problem. Later, he thought it was a problem of the mind. He even used photos and drawings to show his work. This helped other doctors see what he saw. His work helped start the field of modern psychiatry. Psychiatry is the study of how the mind works.
