Charles Grandison Finney was a famous American preacher. He lived from 1792 to 1875. He was a leader in a time called the Second Great Awakening. This was a time of many religious meetings. Finney was known for leading these big meetings. People called them revivals.

Finney had many new ideas for preaching. He let women pray out loud in public. He also used an "anxious seat." This was a place for people to sit and think about faith. He wanted people to change their lives for the better. He believed people could choose to follow God.

Finney also worked for social change. He spoke out against slavery. He called it a great sin. He even refused to share communion with slave owners. He helped Oberlin College in Ohio. This school was very special. It was the first to let women and Black people study there. Finney served as its second president. He worked with others to help people escape slavery. He wanted a better world for everyone.
