Sylvester Graham was a minister in America. He wanted to help people stay healthy. He is often called the "Father of Vegetarianism." This means he helped start the movement of eating plants.

Graham believed that meat and alcohol were bad for the body. He thought they led to bad choices. He taught people to eat whole grains instead. He made bread from coarsely ground flour. People call this graham bread. His ideas also led to graham crackers.

Graham had many rules for a healthy life. He told people to drink pure water. He said to avoid spices. He even told people to sleep on hard beds. He thought a simple life kept the soul pure.

Not everyone liked his ideas. Some bakers and butchers were angry. His talks sometimes caused riots. This happened when people disagreed with his views. Even so, many people followed him. They started groups to promote natural foods. His work helped change how many people think about food and health today.
