He was a Quaker. Quakers are people who follow a peaceful way of life. In 1824, he opened a shop in Birmingham. He sold tea, coffee, and mustard. He also made his own cocoa and drinking chocolate. By 1842, he sold sixteen types of drinking chocolate. Later, he started a company with his brother, Benjamin. They called it Cadbury Brothers.

John also wanted to help the world. He fought for animal welfare, which means being kind to animals. He worked to stop pollution in his own factory. He also believed in temperance. This is the choice to not drink alcohol. He thought drinking chocolate was a better choice for people.

John helped build hospitals and schools. He also helped people who could not see. His sons later built a special village called Bournville. They moved the factory there to make a better place for workers. Bournville is still a place where no alcohol is sold. This follows the ideas that John lived by.
