His father, Richard Tapper Cadbury, worked as a linen draper. John grew up in a wealthy Quaker family. He went to school at Joseph Crosfield's Quaker School in Warwickshire. He spent much of his life helping his community through many different jobs.

John started his business by learning from others. In 1818, he was an apprentice to a tea dealer in Leeds. He opened his own shop in Birmingham in 1824. This shop was at 93 Bull Street. He sold tea, coffee, hops, and mustard there. He also made his own cocoa and drinking chocolate. By 1842, he had sixteen types of drinking chocolate. He also sold eleven types of cocoa. John used his life to help many people. He was a strong advocate for animal welfare. This means he worked to stop cruelty to animals. He also fought for environmental reform. He worked to reduce pollution in his own factory. He wanted to help make laws to stop industrial pollution too. John was also part of the temperance movement. This is a movement where people choose not to drink alcohol. He believed drinking chocolate was a better choice for everyone. He had been a total abstainer for fifty years when he died.

John was a very busy leader in his community. He served as a Poor Law guardian from 1830 to 1841. During this time, he spoke out against the exploitation of climbing boys. He also supported the Peace Society and the Animals' Friend Society. He helped build hospitals and savings banks. He also worked to help people who were blind. John married twice during his life. His first wife was Priscilla Ann Dymond. His second wife was Candia Barrow. They had seven children together.

John's ideas changed how people lived even after he died. He dreamed of a special model village. In 1879, his sons Richard and George moved the factory. They moved it to an area near Northfield and King's Norton. They built a village there called Bournville.

This village was built to be a better place for workers. Because of John's history with temperance, Bournville has been a dry place for over 100 years. This means no alcohol is sold in its shops or pubs. People there even fought a court case in 2007 to keep it that way.
