He lived during a time of great change in Britain. Born in Birmingham in 1728, he grew up in a family of makers. His father made small metal items known as "toys." These were not playthings, but useful things like buckles and buttons.

Boulton learned these skills early in life. By age 17, he invented a new way to decorate buckles with enamel. This made his family business very successful and popular.

Boulton wanted to do much more than make small items. He built a huge workshop called the Soho Manufactory.

This place was a modern marvel of the 1760s. It had many different buildings for different jobs. He used the latest tools to make beautiful silver plates. He also made decorative vases using ormolu. This was a way to add gold to objects. He mixed gold with mercury to make a paste. Then, he heated the object to drive off the mercury. This left a beautiful gold decoration behind.

One of Boulton's greatest achievements was his partnership with James Watt.

They worked together to sell steam engines. These engines were much better than older machines. They could power large factories and mills. This helped change how things were made in many places. The pair installed hundreds of these engines across Britain and even in other countries. This work helped start the Industrial Revolution. Boulton even helped protect Watt's ideas by asking Parliament to extend his patent.

Boulton was also a master of making money. He founded the Soho Mint to make coins.

He used steam power to strike these coins. In 1797, he received a contract to make copper coins for Britain. He created famous "cartwheel" pieces.

These coins were thick and very hard to fake. One of his large copper pennies stayed in use for a very long time. His work helped make the British coinage system much better. He brought modern techniques to a very old job.

Boulton was a very social and curious man. He was a key member of the Lunar Society.

This was a group of smart men in Birmingham. They met once a month near the full moon. Members included scientists like Joseph Priestley and Josiah Wedgwood. They talked about science, art, and new ways to build things. Their ideas helped change the world through new technology. Boulton's life shows how business and science can work together to create something new.
