As a young man, Boulton grew his business. He built a huge workshop called the Soho Manufactory.

It was a modern marvel of its time. At Soho, he made beautiful silver items. He also made vases using ormolu. This is a way to add gold to objects. He did this by mixing gold with mercury. Then, he heated the item to drive off the mercury.

Boulton also worked with an engineer named James Watt. Together, they sold many steam engines.

These engines helped power big factories. Boulton also used steam power to make coins. He made the "cartwheel" copper coins.
