He changed how we create power and how ships move. His most famous invention was the modern steam turbine. This machine uses steam to create steady energy. His work made cheap electricity available to many people. It also changed naval warfare and sea travel forever.

Parsons solved a hard problem with his turbine design. Earlier designs used very high steam pressure. This caused huge forces that could damage the metal.

To fix this, he created a compound steam turbine in 1884. He split the steam pressure into many small parts. The steam moved through a long series of turbines. This kept the speed of the steam at a safe level. It prevented the steam from cutting into the metal parts.

Parsons was born in London on 13 June 1854. He came from an aristocratic family in Ireland. His father was William Parsons, the 3rd Earl of Rosse. Charles studied mathematics at Trinity College Dublin. Later, he graduated from St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1877. He began his career as an apprentice in Newcastle. He later worked on rocket-powered torpedoes in Leeds.

His inventions led to many amazing records and facts. In 1890, his company opened the first power station to use turbo generators.

This was the Forth Banks Power Station. In 1899, he built a massive 1 megawatt turbine for Elberfeld, Germany. He also built the Turbinia, a very fast steamship.

In 1897, the Turbinia was faster than any Royal Navy ship. Later, his engines powered the HMS Dreadnought in 1906.

Many people honored him for his great work. He was knighted in 1911 for his service. He also received the Copley Medal in 1928. You can see his face on an Irish silver coin today.

His family's home, Birr Castle, has a museum about him. The Irish Academy of Engineering even has a medal named after him. This medal goes to engineers who do exceptional work. His ideas still help us understand power and movement today.
