John Dalton was a famous English scientist who changed how we see the world.

He worked as a chemist, a physicist, and a meteorologist. This means he studied chemicals, energy, and the weather. His work helped turn chemistry from a science of description into a science of math. He was even elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1822. Later, in 1826, he won the Royal Medal for his great work.

His many discoveries helped build the foundation for modern science today.

Dalton is best known for creating a modern atomic theory.

He proposed that every chemical element is made of tiny particles called atoms. He said that all atoms of one element are identical in size and weight. Atoms of different elements have different sizes and weights. He also showed that atoms combine in fixed, whole-number ratios to make compounds. During chemical reactions, these atoms are simply rearranged, separated, or combined.

This idea gave scientists a way to use math to find chemical formulas.

Dalton was also a pioneer in studying the weather.

He began keeping a weather diary when he was 21 years old. For 57 years, he recorded more than 200,000 different observations. He even climbed mountains to measure temperature and humidity. Since there were no airplanes then, climbing was the only way to reach high altitudes. He used a tool called a barometer to estimate the height of these mountains. His work helped people understand how air moves around our planet.

Dalton was born in 1766 in Eaglesfield, England.

His father worked as a weaver, and the family was quite poor. Because of this, Dalton started working at age ten to earn money. He lived in places like Cumberland and Manchester during his life. He also studied how he saw colors because he was color blind. He and his brother both had this condition. This led to the first scientific descriptions of how people see color.

We still see Dalton's name in science classrooms today.

Scientists use a unit of atomic mass called the dalton. Its symbol is Da, and it is used in official science measurements. His ideas about atoms are the same ones we use to understand matter now. Even though some of his specific rules were different, his main principles survived. He showed us that the tiny, invisible world follows very strict rules. This helped us understand everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink.
