Hypnosis is a special state of mind.

In this state, a person has very focused attention. They might not notice things happening around them. They also feel very calm and relaxed. This makes them more likely to follow suggestions. A suggestion is an idea or instruction given to a person.

There are different ways to use hypnosis. Some people use it for therapy. This is called hypnotherapy. Other people use it for fun on a stage. This is called stage hypnosis.

Some scientists think hypnosis is a trance. A trance is a state of mind different from being awake. Other scientists think it is just a way to focus. They think people act a certain way because they expect to.

To start, a person goes through induction. This is a set of steps to help them focus. One old way was to have a person stare at one spot. This is called eye-fixation. Some people believe hypnosis works by talking to the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is the part of the mind that works deep inside us. Others think it only talks to the conscious mind. The conscious mind is the part we use to think and act every day.
