Habit

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A habit is a way of behaving that we repeat often. These routines happen subconsciously, which means we do them without thinking. Some habits are helpful, like eating healthy foods or exercising. Other habits can be bad, like procrastination or smoking.

Many people do not even notice their own habits. This is because we do not need to think hard about routine tasks. A study in 2002 found that about 43% of daily behaviors are habits. These behaviors can be efficient and automatic. They might even feel hard to control once they start.

Habits work through a special cycle called a habit loop. First, a context cue acts as a trigger. This cue could be a certain time or a specific place. The cue leads to a craving, which is a strong desire. This craving is the force that moves you to act. Then, you perform the actual behavior or routine. Finally, you receive a reward, like a positive feeling. This reward reinforces the loop and helps the habit stay.

Repeating this loop makes the link between the cue and the action much stronger.

People have studied habits for a very long time. The idea goes back to ancient Greek thinkers like Aristotle. He believed that repeating actions helped form a person's character. The word habit comes from Latin words meaning "to have" or "a state of being." In 1890, a thinker named William James wrote about habits in a book. He said that living creatures are like bundles of habits. He believed habits help us navigate our daily lives.

He also noted that habits can make us act without a conscious purpose.

Forming a new habit can take a lot of patience. It is a slow process of building new paths in the brain. Researchers found that it takes about 66 days on average to make a behavior automatic. However, this can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days.

Some habits are called keystone habits because they lead to other changes. For example, exercising regularly might help a person eat better. Some habits are also tied to our emotions. Nervous habits, like nail-biting, can be signs of feeling anxious or tense.

Changing habits is a hard job, but it is possible. You can try to replace a bad habit with a healthy one. Some people use digital tools or apps to help them stay on track. These apps sometimes use rewards, like gold or experience, to make tasks fun.

It is often easier to change habits during major life moments. These moments include moving to a new home or graduating. Understanding the cue and the reward is the best way to change. If you can control the behavior, it is a habit rather than an illness.
