arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A self-help book is a special kind of text. It is written to help readers solve personal problems. People also call them self-improvement books. These books teach people how to grow or change. They often use ideas from popular psychology. Psychology is the study of how people think and feel. Some famous examples are Atomic Habits by James Clear. Another well-known book is Man's Search For Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl.

Many different kinds of books follow this goal. Some books focus on building new habits. Others teach you how to talk to people. Some guides even talk about how to handle love. Some writers use a very personal tone. They write as if they are talking to a friend. This can feel like peer support. It can feel like someone is helping you through a hard time.

Guides for behavior have existed for a very long time. People in the Bronze Age had rules for how to act. Ancient Egyptian codes told people not to act like a broken rudder. In Rome, Cicero wrote handbooks for his readers. Ovid wrote books about love and social skills. During the Islamic Golden Age, Al-Ghazali wrote advice for a student. In the Middle Ages, people wrote guides called Conduir-amour. These were guides for matters of love.

In 1859, Samuel Smiles wrote a book called Self-Help. This book is very famous and gave the genre its name. In the 20th century, these books became much more common. Between 1972 and 2000, their numbers grew quite a bit. They went from 1.1 percent to 2.4 percent of books in print. In 1936, Dale Carnegie wrote How to Win Friends and Influence People. This book became one of the best-selling books ever.

Today, many different people write these books. You can find them in shops or online. Many celebrities like Oprah Winfrey or Tony Robbins write them. Some books are even used in stories. In the book Bridget Jones's Diary, the character uses these books. She tries to follow their many instructions. Some people even use them as a way to learn about themselves. They are a big part of our modern culture.
