It is a special kind of story called an animal autobiography. This means the main character is a horse who tells his own life story. The book follows a handsome black horse from his early days as a foal. He starts his life on a peaceful English farm with his mother, Duchess. Later, he moves to the busy streets of London to pull cabs. Through his eyes, readers see both the kindness and the cruelty of humans. This unique way of writing helps people feel what a horse might feel.

Reading the story is like seeing the world through a horse's eyes. The book uses a style called anthropomorphism to give the horse human feelings. Black Beauty shows emotions like love and loyalty just like a person would. He meets many different companions, such as a nervous mare named Lizzie. He also meets a chestnut horse named Ginger who has had a very hard life. Ginger tells Beauty how a painful strap called a bearing rein hurt her neck and jaw. The story moves through many short chapters that each teach a lesson. These lessons focus on being kind, sympathetic, and understanding toward animals.

An English author named Anna Sewell wrote this novel.

She was born in Great Yarmouth, England. When she was 14, she fell in the rain and injured her ankles. This injury meant she could not walk or stand for long periods. Because she stayed home, she spent a lot of time learning about horses. She often drove her father to the train station using horse-drawn transport. This experience helped her grow a deep respect for these animals. She wrote the book at her home in Old Catton while she was very ill.

Anna Sewell published the book in 1877.

She sold the story to local publishers called Jarrold & Sons. She only received £20 for her work at that time. Even though she was sick in bed, she lived to see the book become a success. She died on April 25, 1878, just five months after the book came out. Since then, Black Beauty has sold over fifty million copies. It is the sixth best-selling book in the English language. It has been translated into 50 different languages around the world.

This book did much more than just tell a story. It actually helped change laws to protect animals. Because people felt so much sympathy for the horses, they wanted to stop cruel practices. The book helped stop the use of the painful bearing rein in Victorian England. It also made people think about how blinkers could cause accidents at night. Some people even say it helped change cab license fees in London. Today, many people still read it as a children's book. It remains a powerful way to teach people how to treat others with respect.
