She is best known for her only book, Black Beauty. This story was very special because it was told from the view of a horse. People loved it because it taught them to be kind and sympathetic to animals. Her writing helped many people understand how to treat horses with care. It remains a very important book in the world of literature today.

Writing the book was a long and careful task for Anna. She began writing about the life of a horse in November 1871. Because she was often too weak to write by hand, she used her mother for help. Anna would dictate her ideas out loud to her mother. Later, she even wrote some notes in pencil herself. Her mother then transcribed these notes into the final story. This teamwork helped create a book that reached many readers.

Anna was born on March 30, 1820, in Great Yarmouth.

Her parents, Isaac and Mary Wright Sewell, were part of Quaker families. Her mother was also a writer who wrote books for children. Anna spent much of her life moving between places like London, Brighton, and Norfolk. She lived in many different homes, including a house in Old Catton. These moves were often due to her father's different jobs in banking or brewing.

Life was not always easy for Anna due to her health. When she was fourteen, she slipped on wet leaves in the rain. This fall caused a sprained ankle that never fully healed. It made walking a very hard job for the rest of her life. Later, she suffered from a long illness that left her feeling weak and tired. She often had to stay on a bed or a sofa. She spent many years visiting different spas in England and Europe to try to feel better.

Even though she faced these struggles, Anna's work had a huge impact. Black Beauty was published in late 1877, just before she died in April 1878. The book was a massive success and sold many copies very quickly. By 1890, over 100,000 copies had been sold in Britain alone. Eventually, an estimated 40 million copies were sold in many different languages. Her message about kindness to animals traveled all around the world.
