She was born in Edenton, North Carolina, around 1813 or 1815. At that time, she was born into slavery. This meant she was not free to make her own choices. Her life was very difficult because of the laws of that time. She eventually wrote a famous book called "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl."

Her master was a man named Dr. James Norcom. He treated her very poorly and harassed her. To stay safe and protect her children, Harriet had to hide. She found a tiny crawlspace under the roof of her grandmother's house.

This space was so small that she could not even stand up. She stayed in that dark spot for seven long years. She bored small holes in the wall to let in light. She used that tiny bit of light to read the Bible and newspapers.

In 1842, Harriet finally found a way to escape to freedom.

She traveled by boat to Philadelphia first. Then, she moved to New York City to find work. She became a nanny for a woman named Mary Stace Willis. Even in the North, Harriet had to be careful. In 1843, she learned that Dr. Norcom was coming to find her. She had to flee again to Boston to stay safe. Boston was a place where many people worked to end slavery.

Harriet was a very strong person who never stopped working.

She joined with many reformers who fought for fairness. Her brother, John S. Jacobs, also worked hard for this cause. During and after the American Civil War, Harriet traveled back to the South. She went to parts of the land that were held by the Union. There, she helped organize help for people who had been freed. She even helped found two schools for them.
