She was born in London on January 13, 1713. Her father was Colley Cibber, a well-known poet and actor. Her mother, Katherine Shore, was also a musician and actress. Charlotte grew up around the Theatre Royal of Drury Lane. This was a place where her family worked and lived. She was the youngest of twelve children in her family. Even as a small child, she loved the theater. She even liked to pretend to be her father.

Charlotte was a very independent person from a young age. She studied many subjects at Mrs. Draper's School for Girls. She learned Latin, Italian, and geography during her time there. She also studied dance with a teacher named Mr. Grosconet. While other girls learned sewing, Charlotte preferred science and languages. She even taught herself how to garden and ride horses. At age thirteen, she even tried to be a doctor. She later began her acting career at the age of seventeen.

She even ran a puppet theater using wooden dolls. These shows used stringed figures to tell funny stories. Because they were puppets, the government did not censor them. Her puppet shows were very popular with many people.

Life was often very hard for Charlotte due to money troubles. She struggled to find steady work in the big theaters. She tried many different jobs to take care of her daughter, Catherine. Charlotte worked as a sausage maker and a valet. She also worked as a farmer and a pastry chef.
