She was known for her incredible ability to act in tragic plays. These are serious stories that often involve great sadness. People loved watching her because she could show many different feelings. Acting was a job that required great skill and emotion. Barry used her voice to make people feel deep pity. One actor, Colley Cibber, said her voice could become very soft and musical when she acted out sadness. She was especially good at making people cry during her performances. Playwrights like Thomas Otway and Thomas Southerne wrote special roles just for her. They wanted her to play characters like Monimia in "The Orphan" or Isabella in "The Fatal Marriage." These roles helped her become a very famous name in the city.

Barry's career had many different stages and changes. She began her first performance at age 17 in a play called "Alcibiades." Her first try was not very successful, and she was fired from the Duke's Company. However, she kept working and became very successful later on. She worked at the Duke's Theatre at Dorset Gardens, which was a very luxurious place. For many years, she was part of the United Company. In 1695, she left that group because of a disagreement over her pay. She then helped start a new group called Betterton's Company.

There are many interesting facts about her life and work. She worked as a professional actress for a total of 35 years. Even though she was a star, she earned less money than some men. For example, Thomas Betterton earned 4 pounds and 20 shillings per week. Barry received only 2 pounds and 10 shillings per week. She was also one of the original shareholders in her own company. She eventually retired from the stage in 1710 at the age of 52. Sadly, she died three years later from a fever at age 55.

Elizabeth Barry's life shows how much an artist can change the world. Her style of acting helped create a new type of play called "she-tragedy." This was a popular genre that focused on the lives of women. Even though people said she was not a beautiful woman off the stage, they thought she was the finest woman on the stage. Her performances were so powerful that they inspired many writers to create new stories. Today, her name is still remembered in history and in modern plays. She proved that great talent can shine through any struggle.
