Anne Bracegirdle was a famous English actress and a soprano. A soprano is a singer with a very high voice.

She was a star because she could act and sing in the same shows. Many plays during her time used both skills. Great composers wrote special music just for her to perform. John Eccles wrote many pieces for her to sing. Henry Purcell also wrote music for her. One of her most famous songs was called "I burn." Eccles wrote this song for a play called "The Comical History of Don Quixote" in 1694. She also sang in "The Richmond Heiress" and played the goddess Venus in an opera.

Performing on stage was a busy way of life for Anne. She often played "breeches roles," which are parts where a woman dresses like a man. This was a type of role she returned to many times. She worked her way up to being a very important member of her acting company. Because people liked her so much, she often spoke the prologues and epilogues. These are the short speeches at the start or end of a play.

She moved from small parts to being a favorite of the audience. Her talent helped her become one of the most well-known women on the stage.

Anne's life began in Northamptonshire, England. She was baptized at St Giles in Northampton on November 15, 1671. Some people think she was born even earlier, around 1663. She was likely raised by two famous actors named Thomas and Mary Betterton. Before 1688, playbills sometimes called her a "little girl" in the Duke's Company. By 1688, her name appeared in official records for the United Company.

She spent many years performing in the great theaters of London. Her career showed how much she grew from a young girl into a star.

Her fame sometimes caused big problems in the real world. In 1692, a man named Richard Hill was very jealous. He and a group of men tried to take Anne away by force. During this event, an actor named William Mountfort was killed in the street. This was a very sad and serious moment for everyone.

Even after this tragedy, Anne stayed famous. People still talked about her for many years. In 1702, she was still known as a very celebrated person. Her life was full of both great success and difficult times.

As time went on, things began to change for Anne. In 1705, a new actress named Anne Oldfield became very popular. Audiences started to prefer the new actress over Anne Bracegirdle. Because of this, Anne decided to quit the stage. She made only one more appearance in 1709 for a special event.

Anne had a special wish for her final resting place. She asked to be buried in Westminster Abbey. Her wish was granted, and she is buried there today. Her life reminds us how much people loved the art of theater.
