Fry had a very busy way of working. He did not just write for the stage. He also wrote scripts for movies and television shows. He helped write for the famous movie Ben-Hur in 1959. He also worked on films like Barabbas and The Bible: In the Beginning. On television, he wrote many scripts like The Brontës of Haworth. He even wrote for a documentary called The Queen Is Crowned. This shows how much he loved telling stories in different ways.

His life began in Bristol, England. He was born Arthur Hammond Harris on December 18, 1907. He later took his mother's maiden name, Fry. He did this because he believed he was related to Elizabeth Fry. Elizabeth Fry was a famous person who helped reform prisons. Because of this, Fry became a member of the Quaker faith. He spent time as a schoolteacher before he started his career in theater.

Many important people and places were part of his journey. In 1932, he started a group called the Tunbridge Wells Repertory Players. He later became the artistic director of the Oxford Playhouse in 1939. The poet T. S. Eliot was a friend and an influence on him. During World War II, Fry was a conscientious objector. This means he chose not to fight in the war. He served in the Non-Combatant Corps and cleaned sewers in London.
