The story is based on a 1913 play called Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw. It is set in Edwardian London. The plot follows a flower girl named Eliza Doolittle. Eliza has a thick Cockney accent. She wants to learn to speak properly to get a better job. She meets a professor named Henry Higgins who studies phonetics. Phonetics is the study of how people make sounds when they speak. Higgins makes a bet that he can teach her to pass as a lady.

The musical works by using music to show how the characters feel. In the first act, Eliza undergoes tough speech lessons with Higgins. They practice many exercises to change her way of speaking. One famous moment is the song "The Rain in Spain." This song shows Eliza practicing her new way of talking. Later, Eliza must pass a big test at an Embassy Ball. She must act and speak like a member of high society. This part of the story is very important to the plot. The characters use songs like "I Could Have Danced All Night" to show their joy.

The creation of this musical was a long and difficult journey. In the mid-1930s, a producer named Gabriel Pascal wanted to make a film of Shaw's play. However, Shaw did not want his play turned into a musical. After Shaw died in 1950, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe began working on the adaptation. They actually stopped working for two years because the play was hard to change. They felt the story lacked a central love story for a musical. Eventually, they realized they only needed to add action between the acts. They worked very hard to finish the show even before they had the legal rights.

Many real people helped make the show a massive success. The original Broadway production in 1956 won six Tony Awards. This included the prize for Best Musical. It also set a record for the longest run on Broadway at that time. Rex Harrison played Professor Higgins and Julie Andrews played Eliza Doolittle. Rex Harrison was even suggested for the role by Noël Coward. The musical also had a big hit in London. In 1964, a film version was released. That movie won an Academy Award for Best Picture.

You might recognize elements of this story from other famous works. The musical uses scenes from a 1938 film version of the play. It also uses a famous nursery rhyme for its title. The name comes from the last line of "London Bridge Is Falling Down." The show connects the world of theater with the world of movies. Many people still watch new versions of the show today. It remains a classic part of arts and culture.
