The creators, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, wanted to do something special. They wanted to create a successful show that also shared a message against racism. They used the stories to show why prejudice is wrong.

The musical follows two main romances on an island during World War II. One story is about a nurse named Nellie Forbush from Arkansas. She falls in love with a French plantation owner named Emile De Becque.

Nellie must learn to accept Emile's children who come from different racial backgrounds. A second story follows a Marine named Joe Cable and a woman named Liat. Joe struggles with his fears about what society might think of their love.

These stories help the audience feel the tension of the time.

To make the musical, the creators studied Michener's many stories. Hammerstein spent months looking at different tales to find the best ones. He wanted to make sure the show felt real.

Because he was not in the military, Hammerstein worked with director Joshua Logan to learn about soldier life. They even talked to the U.S. Navy to get details right. The team decided not to use a ballet to keep the setting feeling natural. They wanted the characters and their feelings to be the main focus.

This production was a huge success for everyone involved. It won ten Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score.

It is the only musical to win Tony Awards in all four acting categories. The original cast album was the best-selling record of the 1940s. Many of the songs became famous standards that people still sing today. These include "Some Enchanted Evening," "Bali Ha'i," and "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair."
