It tells the story of a group called a "tribe." These are young, long-haired hippies living in New York City. They follow a lifestyle called bohemian, which means they live freely. The story focuses on characters like Claude and his friend Berger. They try to balance their young lives with their fight against the Vietnam War. Claude must eventually decide if he will join the military or resist the draft. This choice is a hard job because it risks his life and his beliefs.

The musical works in a very new and exciting way. It was one of the first shows to use a rock music style. The actors do not just stand on stage and sing. They often break the "fourth wall" to talk directly to the audience. Sometimes, the actors even switch roles in the middle of a scene. For the big finale, the show invites the audience onstage for a "Be-In." This is a big, happy gathering that makes everyone feel part of the group.

Two friends, James Rado and Gerome Ragni, started writing the show in 1964. They wanted to bring the excitement of the streets to the stage. They met many people in the East Village who were dodging the draft. Rado and Ragni used their own lives to create the main characters. Rado's character, Claude, is a quiet romantic person. Ragni's character, Berger, is an extrovert who loves being social. They even worked with composer Galt MacDermot to write the music. MacDermot wrote the first songs in just three weeks.

The history of the show is full of big moments and surprises. It first appeared off-Broadway on October 17, 1967, at the Public Theater. Later, it moved to a nightclub called the Cheetah. By April 1968, the show opened on Broadway. It was a huge success and ran for 1,750 performances there. The original Broadway cast recording sold 3 million copies. Many songs became Top 10 hits on the radio. The show even traveled to London, where it ran for 1,997 performances.

Even many years later, people still love this musical. A new version opened on Broadway in 2009. This revival won both a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. Some people think the show feels even more daring today than it did in the 1960s. It connects to the way we think about music and protest. It showed that theater could be loud, colorful, and full of life. Because it used a cast of many different races, it helped change how shows were made. It remains a famous part of American culture.
