Hairspray is a famous American musical that celebrates music and change. It is based on a 1988 film by John Waters. The story is set in 1962 in Baltimore, Maryland. It follows a teenager named Tracy Turnblad. Tracy has a big dream to dance on a local TV show. This program is called The Corny Collins Show. The show is based on a real dance program called the Buddy Deane Show.

The musical uses very energetic music. The songs use 1960s-style dance music. They also use a style called rhythm and blues. One famous song is the opening number, "Good Morning Baltimore." Another important song is "I Know Where I've Been." This song was written to give a powerful moment to the Black family in the story. The creators wanted to make sure the story showed real social change. Tracy campaigns to help the show include all kinds of people.

Producer Margo Lion first thought of the musical in 1998. She saw the original movie on her television at home. She worked with Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman to write the music. They even made a demo recording with singer Annie Golden. The team also included director Jack O'Brien and choreographer Jerry Mitchell. Marissa Jaret Winokur was chosen to play Tracy Turnblad. She practiced her voice and dance moves for two years.

The musical had a very successful start on Broadway. It opened at the Neil Simon Theatre on August 15, 2002. That same year, the show won eight Tony Awards. One of those big awards was for Best Musical. The production ran for 2,642 performances until January 4, 2009. In London, the show was also very popular. It won four Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical.

Hairspray has traveled all over the world. It went on national tours in the United States. It also had big productions in London and Australia. In Australia, the show used new technology like large LED screens. These screens showed moving landscapes behind the actors. There was even a revival in Melbourne in 2022. This show helps people connect through the joy of dance and the hope for a better world.
