*The Outsiders* is a famous novel about growing up. It was written by S. E. Hinton and published in 1967. The story takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It follows a fourteen-year-old boy named Ponyboy Curtis. Ponyboy is part of a group called the Greasers. They are working-class teenagers. They have a rivalry with the Socs, or Socials. The Socs come from upper-middle-class families. This book helps readers understand the hard parts of life.

The story uses a first-person perspective. This means Ponyboy tells the story himself. He describes his life with his brothers, Darry and Sodapop. The plot involves many difficult events. Ponyboy and his friend Johnny must hide in an abandoned church. While there, Ponyboy reads a book and recites a poem. The poem is "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost. Later, the boys become heroes by saving children from a fire. This story shows how friendship and bravery can change people.

S. E. Hinton began writing this book at age 15. She was 16 when she wrote most of it. She was a junior in high school at the time. When the book was published, she was only 18 years old. She used her initials, S. E., instead of her full name. She did this so male reviewers would not ignore her work. This was a smart way to handle the book world.

Many different versions of this story exist today. A movie was directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1983. It featured young actors like Tom Cruise and Patrick Swayze. A television series aired in 1990. There is also a stage musical that premiered on Broadway in 2024. This musical won four Tony Awards. Even a museum exists for the book. The Outsiders House Museum opened in Tulsa in 2019.

This book has had a very big impact on culture. The BBC listed it as one of the 100 most influential novels. However, some people have tried to ban it. They worried about the violence and language in the text. It was ranked #38 on a list of frequently challenged books. Even so, many schools still teach it in English classes. The story stays important to many readers.
