Lee first wrote a manuscript called Go Set a Watchman. An editor named Tay Hohoff helped her turn it into a better story. They talked for hours about how to fix the characters and the plot. At one point, Lee felt so frustrated she threw her pages into the snow! Hohoff told her to go outside and pick them up immediately. Through this hard work, the book finally found its true strength. This careful process helped create a masterpiece that readers still cherish today.

Lee's life in Alabama provided many ideas for her writing.
