Her long career showed the world how much power an actress can have.

Acting is a way of telling stories by becoming a character. Cicely learned this skill by studying under a teacher named Lee Strasberg. She started her journey as a fashion model after a photographer found her. Soon, she moved from modeling to small parts in movies and plays. She worked hard to move from small roles to being a leading star. She even became the first Black woman to host the show Saturday Night Live in 1979. She also made history as the first Black woman to wear an Afro on television.

Cicely was born on December 19, 1924, in the Bronx, New York City. Her parents, Fredericka and William, moved to the United States from Nevis in the West Indies. Her father arrived at Ellis Island on August 4, 1919. Cicely grew up in East Harlem in a religious home. She sang in the choir at an Episcopal church. Her mother did not want her to be an actress at first. However, her mother changed her mind after seeing Cicely perform on a stage.

She appeared in many famous movies and shows throughout her life. In 1972, she starred in the film Sounder, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination. She played a mother facing many hard times in that story. In 1974, she won an Emmy for her role in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. She also acted in the movie The Help in 2011.
