He was known for writing novels about life in the South. His books often explored how people feel in the modern age. He also studied philosophy and semiotics, which is the study of signs and symbols. His first novel, *The Moviegoer*, won the National Book Award for Fiction. This book used characters that felt like people he knew from college. Percy wanted to show the struggle of finding meaning in a busy world. He used his own faith and ideas to tell these stories.

Before he was a writer, Percy trained to be a doctor. He earned his medical degree from Columbia University in 1941. He wanted to work as a psychiatrist to help the mind. However, his path changed when he got sick with tuberculosis. He caught the illness while working at Bellevue Hospital in 1942. Because there was no easy cure, he had to go away to rest. He spent several years at the Trudeau Sanitorium in New York.

During this time, he read many famous books and began to question science. This quiet time helped him decide to leave medicine for writing.

Percy was born on May 28, 1916, in Birmingham, Alabama. His family had a long history in the South. His father was LeRoy Pratt Percy and his mother was Martha Susan Phinizy. He faced many hard times as a young boy. His grandfather died in 1917, and his father died in 1929. His mother also died when he was quite young. After these losses, a relative named William Alexander Percy took him in.

Uncle Will was a lawyer and a poet who introduced him to many books.

Percy's life was full of important connections and places. He went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. There, he became close friends with a man named Shelby Foote. They stayed best friends and wrote letters for many years. Percy lived in many places like Mississippi, New York, and Louisiana. He eventually settled in Covington, Louisiana, with his wife, Mary Bernice Townsend. They had two daughters named Mary Pratt and Ann.

He also helped other writers, like John Kennedy Toole, find success with their books.

Many of Percy's ideas came from his own life experiences. He used stories from his family history in his book *The Thanatos Syndrome*. He also wrote essays about his Catholic faith and his views on the world. Even when he was very sick with cancer, he helped doctors. He joined a study at the Mayo Clinic to test new medicines. He wanted his experience to be useful to other people. Percy died in 1990, just before his 74th birthday. He is remembered as a writer who looked deeply at the human spirit.
