He is known for his many novels and short stories. Most of his work is set in a fake place called Yoknapatawpha County. This place was based on Lafayette County in Mississippi. Faulkner is often called a great writer of Southern literature.

He even won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1949. He was the only person born in Mississippi to win this prize.

Faulkner's writing process often involved looking at his own life and history. He grew up in Oxford, Mississippi, and listened to many stories. These stories included tales of the Civil War and his own family. He was very influenced by his great-grandfather, William Clark Falkner.

His great-grandfather was a colonel and a member of the Mississippi House. Faulkner used parts of his great-grandfather's life in his books. He also used the history of the South to build his stories. This helped him create characters that felt very real.

His journey as a writer had many different steps. He was born in New Albany, Mississippi, in 1897. He spent time in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War I.
