Erskine Caldwell was a famous American writer who told stories about real life. He wrote many different things like novels and short stories. He also wrote books for young readers and collections of essays. His work often focused on the people living in the Southern United States. He wanted to show the struggles of farmers and workers. By writing about poverty and social problems, he helped people understand hard lives. His books became very important parts of American literature.

Caldwell had a very busy way of working. He often traveled to find new things to write about. For example, he went to the USSR to report on the war. He also worked as a foreign correspondent from places like Mexico and Czechoslovakia. Sometimes he worked with others to tell a story. He teamed up with a photographer named Margaret Bourke-White. Together, they made three photo-documentaries. These used real photos to show life in different places.

His life began in the small town of White Oak, Georgia. He was born on December 17, 1903. His father was a minister in the Presbyterian Church. His mother, Caroline, was a schoolteacher who taught him at home. Because of his father's job, the family moved to many states. They lived in Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina. When he was 15, his family settled in Wrens, Georgia.

Caldwell became a very successful author during his career. He wrote 25 novels and 150 short stories. Two of his books were huge hits. One was called "Tobacco Road," written in 1932. The other was "God's Little Acre," written in 1933. "Tobacco Road" sold 10 million copies. "God's Little Acre" sold 14 million copies. One of his books was even made into a famous Broadway play.

Even in his later years, Caldwell loved to explore. He spent six months every year traveling the world. He always carried notebooks to jot down his ideas. You can see many of these notebooks today. They are kept in a museum in Moreland, Georgia. This museum is located in the town square. It is also where his childhood home was moved to honor him.
