John Cheever was a famous American writer of short stories and novels.

He is often called "the Chekhov of the suburbs." This means he wrote about everyday life in a very deep way. His stories usually take place in specific locations. He wrote about the Upper East Side of Manhattan and the Westchester suburbs. He also wrote about old villages in New England and beautiful places in Italy. People love his work because it feels very real.

Cheever had a special way of looking at people. He often wrote about duality, which is the idea of having two sides. His characters might act polite in public but feel different inside. He also wrote about the conflict between light and dark. Sometimes he showed this through two characters, like brothers. He often wrote about a vanishing way of life. He missed the old traditions and the strong sense of community. He felt that modern suburbia could sometimes feel lonely.

His life had many changes from the time he was young. He was born in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1912. His family once had a lot of money, but they lost it later. This was a very hard time for his parents. Because of this, he moved to different places. He spent time at a place called Yaddo in New York. Yaddo is an artist's colony where writers go to work. He also lived in many different cities and towns.

Cheever became a very successful writer during his career. In 1935, he sold his first story to The New Yorker magazine. This magazine became a very important part of his life. He wrote many famous stories like "The Enormous Radio" and "The Swimmer." He also wrote the novel The Wapshot Chronicle in 1958. This book won him a National Book Award. Later, his collection of stories won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1979. He even received the National Medal for Literature in 1982.

Many people still study his writing in schools today. His stories help us understand how people live and feel. He used his own life to create his books. For example, he used his memories of New England in his stories. Even when he faced hard times, his writing showed a sense of wonder. This wonder is something many readers still enjoy. His work remains a big part of American literature.
