Nostromo

Nostromo is a famous novel written by Joseph Conrad. It was first published in 1904. Many people believe it is his best long story. One writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald, even said he would rather have written it than any other novel.

In 1998, it was ranked 47th on a list of the 100 best novels of the 20th century. The story is set in a fictional South American country called Costaguana.

The geography of this imaginary land is similar to the real country of Colombia. The main action happens in the port city of Sulaco. This city is part of the Occidental Province.

The plot follows a man named Charles Gould. He owns the San Tomé Silver Mine. Gould wants to bring stability to his country. He uses his wealth to support the government of President Ribiera. He hopes this will end years of fighting and bad leaders.

However, the wealth from his mine actually causes more wars. New leaders and rebels fight to control the silver. This causes chaos in the land. Gould even plans to destroy the mine with dynamite to keep it from enemies.

A brave man named Nostromo is the hero of the story. His real name is Giovanni Battista Fidanza. He is an Italian man living in Sulaco. He is the "Capataz de Cargadores," which means he is the Head Longshoreman.

People respect him for his daring and skill. He is very trusted by the wealthy people in the city. They ask him to hide the silver during a revolution. Nostromo takes the silver to a deserted place called Great Isabel. He works with a journalist named Martin Decoud to save the treasure.

The story shows how secrets can change a person. After the silver is hidden, Nostromo becomes obsessed with it. He keeps the true fate of the silver a secret from everyone. He even makes trips to the island at night to take bits of it back.

This secret makes him feel lonely and worried. Eventually, he is shot and killed while trying to get more silver. He is mistaken for a trespasser by a man named Giorgio Viola. The silver and the secrets lead to his loss of peace.

Many other stories have used ideas from this book. For example, the famous movie Alien uses the name Nostromo for a spacecraft. The sequel, Aliens, uses the name Sulaco for a ship.

Even newer movies like Alien: Romulus use names from Conrad's work. This shows how much people still think about his writing today. The book remains a very important part of literature.
