A man named Charles Gould owns a silver mine. He wants to bring peace to his land. He uses his wealth to help the government. But his silver mine causes more wars.

A brave man named Nostromo helps him. Nostromo is the Head Longshoreman. This means he is a leader of the workers at the port. He is an Italian man. His real name is Giovanni Battista Fidanza.

Nostromo must hide the silver from rebels. He takes the silver to a small island. He keeps a big secret about the silver. This secret changes him. It leads to his end. The book shows how greed and secrets can hurt a person.
