Lord Jim is a famous novel written by Joseph Conrad. It was first shared in pieces in Blackwood's Magazine between October 1899 and November 1900. The story is about a young man named Jim who works on a ship. Jim is a tall, blond Englishman who dreams of being a hero. He wants to do great things on the sea. The book looks at how people deal with their mistakes. It explores how someone can try to find honor again after they fail.

The story begins on a ship called the Patna. The Patna carries 800 pilgrims to the Red Sea. These travelers are following a very important religious belief. One night, the ship hits something under the water. The ship starts to fill with water very quickly. Instead of staying to help, the captain and Jim jump into a small boat. They leave the passengers behind on the sinking ship. This action breaks the important code of the sea.

Joseph Conrad used real events to help write this story. In July 1880, a real ship called the SS Jeddah had a similar problem. That ship also hit a leak and the crew left the passengers. A French navy ship eventually saved the people on the Jeddah. Conrad may have also based the character Jim on a real man named Austin Podmore Williams. Williams was a sailor who also moved away to start a new life.

Jim moves to a remote place to escape his past. He goes to a village called Patusan on a far island. The local Malay and Bugis people live there. Jim works hard to protect the village from a bandit named Sherif Ali. He also deals with a corrupt chief named Rajah Tunku Allang. Because of his leadership, the people call him "Tuan Jim." This title means "Lord Jim."

Later, a mean captain named Gentleman Brown arrives in Patusan. Brown leads a crew of pirates who cause much trouble. During the fighting, a brave leader named Dain Waris is killed. Jim feels he is responsible for this loss. He decides to take responsibility for the tragedy in front of the village. This book is very important in English literature. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked it 85th on a list of great novels.
