Of Human Bondage is a famous novel by W. Somerset Maugham. It was first published in 1915. Many people believe this book is Maugham's greatest work. The story is often called autobiographical. This means it is based on the author's own life. However, Maugham said it is still a work of invention. He originally wanted to call it Beauty from Ashes. He finally chose the title from a writer named Spinoza.

The story follows a young man named Philip Carey. Philip has a club foot, which makes walking difficult. After his mother dies, he lives with his aunt and uncle in Kent. He finds comfort in reading many books. Later, Philip travels to Germany and then to Paris. In Paris, he tries to become a professional artist. He meets a student named Fanny Price there. Philip also tries to study medicine to follow his father's path.

Philip's life is full of many hard moments. He meets a woman named Mildred who breaks his heart. He even loses his money and wanders the streets. Philip works at a department store to survive. He uses his talent for drawing to earn more money. Eventually, he finishes his medical studies and becomes a doctor. He meets a woman named Sally and decides to marry her. He finds peace in a simple life.

Maugham included many real details about art in the book. He named 33 different artists in the story. He also mentioned 10 specific famous paintings. Many of these artists were French painters from the 19th century. Some names include Monet and Renoir. These artists were actually alive when the book was published. Maugham even owned paintings by some of these men. This shows his deep interest in the world of art.

This novel has appeared in many other places. It was made into films in 1934, 1946, and 1964. You can even see it in modern shows. For example, it appears in the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is also in the movie Spider-Man: Homecoming. The animated series Adventure Time features the book too. These appearances show how much people still value the story. It remains a very important piece of English literature.
