To the Lighthouse is a famous novel written by Virginia Woolf in 1927.

It tells the story of the Ramsay family during their summer visits to the Isle of Skye in Scotland. While the book has a plot, it is mostly about what the characters think and feel inside. Woolf uses a special style called multiple focalisation. This means the story moves between the different thoughts of many people. Instead of lots of talking, the book focuses on quiet observations. It helps readers see the small joys and the quiet tragedies of everyday life.

The story is divided into three distinct parts. In the first part, called "The Window," the family stays in a summer house. Mrs. Ramsay tries to promise her son James a trip to the lighthouse. However, Mr. Ramsay thinks the weather will be too bad. This creates tension between the parents and the child. During this time, a young painter named Lily Briscoe tries to paint a portrait. She even faces doubts from a guest named Charles Tansley. The first part ends with a large dinner party at the house.

The second part is titled "Time Passes." This section shows how much life can change over ten years. A great war begins and then ends during this time. The family faces great loss during these years. Mrs. Ramsay dies, along with two of her children, Prue and Andrew. The summer house sits empty for a long time. A worker named Mrs. McNab helps show how the house changes while it is alone. This part shows how time moves forward even when people feel stuck.

In the third part, the family members return to the house. Mr. Ramsay finally goes to the lighthouse with his children, James and Cam. They travel on a boat with a sailor named Macalister. James feels a rare moment of connection with his father during the trip. Meanwhile, Lily Briscoe works to finish her painting from years before. She thinks about her memories of the Ramsays to find the truth. She finishes her work just as the boat reaches the lighthouse.

This book is very important in the history of literature. In 1998, the Modern Library named it the 15th best English-language novel of the 20th century. TIME magazine also chose it as one of the best books since 1923. Much of the story comes from Woolf's own life. She used her memories of her family in St Ives to create the setting. The characters and their feelings reflect her own experiences with loss.
