It was written in 1927. The story follows the Ramsay family. They stay in a summer house on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. The family wants to visit a nearby lighthouse.

The book is not just about what people do. It is mostly about what people think and feel. This is a special way of writing. It lets readers see inside the minds of the characters. We see Mrs. Ramsay, who cares for her family. We see Mr. Ramsay, a teacher of philosophy. We also meet Lily Briscoe. Lily is a young painter. She struggles to finish a portrait of Mrs. Ramsay.

The story moves through three parts. In the first part, the family is together. The second part is called "Time Passes." Ten years go by. The world changes during a big war. Many people in the family die. In the last part, some family members return to the house.
