Joseph Heller was a famous American author who wrote many different things. He wrote novels, short stories, plays, and even scripts for movies and TV.

He was born on May 1, 1923, in Coney Island, Brooklyn. His parents, Lena and Isaac Donald Heller, moved to America from Russia. As a teenager, he even tried to publish a story in a newspaper. After high school, he worked many jobs like a messenger and a clerk. Later, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps when he was nineteen. During the war, he flew 60 combat missions as a bombardier. He flew in a B-25 airplane with the 488th Bombardment Squadron.

Writing was a special way of working for Heller. He did not start a story until he had a first and last line. Usually, the first sentence just appeared in his mind. He would then map out the characters and the plot within an hour.

When he began to write, he focused on just one paragraph at a time. He would write a few pages by hand and then rework them. He often did not know exactly what a story was about until he was one-third finished. Once he had a clear vision, he would rewrite everything and finish the book.

His most famous book is a novel called Catch-22. He came up with the idea in 1953 while sitting at home. The story is a satire, which means it uses humor to show silly things. It follows a soldier named John Yossarian during a war. Yossarian tries to find ways to avoid combat missions. However, the military rules always find a way to make him stay.

The title was changed just before it was published in 1961. This was to avoid confusion with another new book called Mila 18.

Catch-22 became a huge success around the world. In the United Kingdom, it was number one on the bestseller list within one week. In the United States, it eventually sold 10 million copies. The title became a common phrase in many languages. People use "Catch-22" to describe a dilemma with no easy way out.

The book was even listed as a top novel of the century. It was so popular that movie rights were sold in 1962. This helped make Heller a millionaire.

Aside from his big novel, Heller stayed very busy writing. He wrote a play called We Bombed in New Haven in 1967. He also wrote a novel called Something Happened, which was published in 1974. Later, he wrote a book about his life and his recovery from a sickness. In 1981, he had Guillain–Barré syndrome, which left him temporarily paralyzed. He wrote about this time in a book called No Laughing Matter.
