Singer's writing process involved two different languages. He first wrote his stories in Yiddish. Later, he translated them into English. He did this with the help of editors and collaborators. He used a typewriter to get his many ideas down on paper.

He often wrote about characters who felt very alone. He believed that literature should show how unique every person is. His stories could be very exciting even when they were short. He learned how to do this from famous writers like Guy de Maupassant.

He was born in 1903 in a village near Warsaw, Poland.

Growing up in this community helped shape the stories he would tell later.

In 1935, Singer moved from Poland to the United States. He left because he was worried about the growing threat in Germany. When he first arrived in America, he only knew three English words. He settled in New York City and worked for a Yiddish newspaper.
