He was best known for writing books about big industries. His stories followed ordinary people working in very busy places. He wrote about hotels, airports, and even car companies. These books were huge successes around the world. He sold 170 million copies in 38 different languages. People enjoyed seeing how these big businesses worked through his eyes.

Hailey had a very special way of working on his books. He usually spent three years on every single story. First, he would spend one whole year doing research. He wanted to learn every tiny detail about his subject. For his book Hotel, he read 27 books about hotels. For his book Wheels, he spent months at a car plant. Then, he spent six months looking over his notes. Finally, he spent 18 months actually writing the story.

His journey as a writer began a long time ago. Hailey was born on April 5, 1920, in Luton, England. His mother encouraged him to learn typing and shorthand. He worked as an office boy and a clerk in London. During World War II, he served as a pilot in the Royal Air Force. He eventually became a flight lieutenant. In 1947, he moved to Canada and became a citizen there. He lived in Toronto and worked in many different jobs.

Many of Hailey's books became very famous movies and shows. His book Airport, published in 1968, was a massive hit. The movie version was the second-highest-grossing film of 1970. It even received ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. His book Hotel stayed on the New York Times Best Seller list for 48 weeks. Other famous books include The Moneychangers and Overload. He even wrote a book called Strong Medicine about medicine companies.

Hailey's life was full of big changes and new places. After his success, he moved to the Bahamas. He lived in a place called Lyford Cay on New Providence Island. He moved there for a short time but stayed for the rest of his life. He was married twice and had several children. Hailey passed away in his sleep in 2004 at age 84. Today, his many papers are kept in special libraries in Canada and the Bahamas.
