Dick Francis was a famous British jockey and a very successful writer. He lived a life full of fast horses and exciting stories. Before he wrote books, he spent his time riding in horse races. He was a champion jockey in the 1953–54 season. During his career, he won more than 350 races. He even rode horses for Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. One of his most famous moments was in the 1956 Grand National. He was riding a horse named Devon Loch. The horse fell very close to winning the big race. Francis later called this moment a massive disaster.

Francis used his life experiences to create his many books. He wrote more than 40 international best-sellers. Most of his books are thrillers, which are exciting stories about crime. Many of these stories happen in the world of horse racing. His main characters are often people like jockeys, trainers, or pilots. These characters usually face very hard obstacles. They often deal with physical injuries, just like Francis did. He had many injuries from racing, including a broken jaw and nose. He even had his right foot removed later in life.

His writing career began after he left his job as a jockey. He wrote his first book, an autobiography, in 1957. It was called The Sport of Queens. This book was very successful and helped him become a famous writer. In 1962, he published his first thriller called Dead Cert. This book set the pattern for his future work. He wrote almost one new novel every single year for 38 years. He had a very steady routine for his work. He would start writing in January to meet a deadline in May.

Francis did not work alone on his stories. His wife, Mary, was a very important part of his success. She acted as a researcher for his many novels. Mary would learn new skills to help him write better. For one book, she learned how to fly a plane. For another book, she learned about photography. She also helped him edit his manuscripts and plan his plots. Later in his life, his son Felix also helped him. Felix worked as his manager and helped write four books together.

Dick Francis won many prestigious awards for his talent. He won the Edgar Award for Best Novel three times. He won this for his books Forfeit, Whip Hand, and Come to Grief. He also received the Gold Dagger Award from the Crime Writers' Association. These awards showed how much people respected his skill as a storyteller. He even received an honorary doctorate from Tufts University in 1991. His stories were like "fairy tales for adults." They featured brave people who were very resourceful. People loved reading about characters who could overcome great difficulty.
