Peter Dickinson was a gifted English author and poet. He spent his life creating wonderful worlds through words. He wrote almost fifty different books for many readers. Some were simple books for young children to enjoy. Other books were mysteries for adults to solve. He also wrote stories with magic and strange things. These stories are called speculative or supernatural fiction. People love his work because it is so imaginative.

Writing was a way for him to share big ideas. He wrote crime stories in a series called James Pibble. He also wrote the Changes trilogy for children. This trilogy includes The Weathermonger, Heartsease, and The Devil's Children. Interestingly, he wrote these three books in reverse order. The Devil's Children actually happens first in the story timeline. He even wrote a book about the Old Testament. In City of Gold, he retold thirty-three ancient stories. He imagined them as if they were spoken aloud.

Dickinson's love for stories began when he was very young. He was born in 1927 in Livingstone. At that time, the place was called Northern Rhodesia. Now, we know that country as Zambia. As a boy, he loved reading about brave knights. He also read about famous explorers in his books. He loved the writing of a man named Kipling. This early reading helped shape his own writing style. He went to school at Eton College in 1941.

He earned many important awards for his hard work. He won the Carnegie Medal two times. He won it for Tulku in 1979 and City of Gold in 1980. No writer has ever won three of these medals. He was also a finalist for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal. This is a very high honor for children's writers. He won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize for The Blue Hawk. His book Eva even won a Phoenix Award later on.

Dickinson's life was full of many interesting people. He married Mary Rose Barnard in 1953. They had two daughters and two sons. His daughter Philippa became a publisher for books. His son John also became a writer. Later, he married the American author Robin McKinley. They were friends for a long time before marrying in 1991. He died on his 88th birthday in 2015. His many stories live on in libraries today.
