Wilbur Smith was a very famous author of adventure novels.

He spent his life writing stories about Southern Africa. His books often focused on things like hunting, gold mining, and romance. Many of his stories also explored history and conflict. By the time he died in 2021, he had published 49 books. People all over the world bought at least 140 million copies of his work. He was known for making readers feel the excitement of the African bush.

Before he was a full-time writer, Smith had many different jobs. He worked as a tax accountant at the Inland Revenue Service in Salisbury. He often wrote his stories in the evening after his work was done. He once worked on a fishing boat in Walvis Bay. He even spent four weeks working on a whaling factory ship. Later, he worked for the Goodyear Tires and Rubber Co in Port Elizabeth. These different jobs gave him many real things to write about.

Smith found success by writing about what he knew best. His first big hit was a novel called When the Lion Feeds. This book followed two twin brothers named Sean and Garrick Courtney. The story used details from his own family history. His grandfather, Courtney Smith, had been a transport rider during a gold rush. His grandfather also hunted elephants and told wonderful stories. These stories helped inspire Wilbur to become a great storyteller.

Writing was not always easy for him at the start. His first attempt at a novel was actually rejected 20 times. He thought it was too long and had too many characters. He even went back to being an accountant for a while. However, his agent encouraged him to try again. When his first book was finally published, it was a huge success. He earned enough money to quit his job and live in a caravan to write.

Smith's work linked the past with the present through many series. He wrote about the Courtney family across many different time periods. He also created the Ballantyne family to tell stories about colonial history. Some of his books were even made into movies. For example, his book The Dark of the Sun was filmed in 1968. He also wrote a book called The Sunbird to prove he was a real writer. He wanted to show he could write complex stories that could not be filmed.
