He was known for writing best-selling genre fiction. His stories featured glamorous people and fast action. They often included international intrigue, which means secrets between different countries. Many readers found his books very easy to read. People enjoyed them as popular entertainment. Some readers even liked to read them on summer vacations. This type of writing is called escapist literature. It helps people forget their worries for a while.

Oppenheim had a unique way of creating his stories. He did not use a written outline for his books. He said his characters would actually resent using one. Instead, he started with one interesting personality. Then, he would think of a dramatic situation for them. He used that moment to start a long chain of events. This method helped him write very quickly. He once produced seven different works in a single year. He often composed his stories by dictating them to a secretary.

His writing career had an interesting beginning. He was born on October 22, 1866, in London. His father was a leather merchant named Edward John Oppenheim. For almost twenty years, Edward worked in his father's business. Eventually, a wealthy man named Julien Stevens Ulman helped him. Ulman bought the leather works and gave Oppenheim a job. This allowed him to focus on his writing career. He also wrote some books using the name Anthony Partridge.

Oppenheim was a very successful and busy writer. He produced more than 100 novels between 1887 and 1943. He also wrote 38 collections of short stories. Some of his famous books include The Great Impersonation. This book was called his best work in 1920. In 1927, he was even featured on the cover of Time magazine. One review said his books were in almost every home. He had hundreds of thousands of admirers around the world.

His success changed how he lived his life. He was able to buy a yacht and a villa. He also owned a house in Guernsey. He lived in many places, including England and France. During the First World War, he worked for the Ministry of Information. He eventually wrote an autobiography called The Pool of Memory. He died on February 3, 1946, at Le Vauquiedor Manor. His wife passed away at that same home later that year.
