A critic is someone who studies and writes about books. He was also the editor of a magazine called Horizon. Connolly was known for his smart ideas and his love of travel. He wrote a famous book called Enemies of Promise in 1938. This book looked at why he did not become a successful fiction writer like he wanted to be. He used his own life stories to explain his thoughts on writing.

His life changed many times as he grew up. He spent time in South Africa and England and Ireland. He went to school at St Cyprian's in Eastbourne. There, he was friends with the writer George Orwell. Connolly was very good at history and won several prizes. Later, he went to Eton and then to Balliol College at Oxford University. At Oxford, he did not spend all his time studying. He spent much of his time traveling to places like Italy, Spain, and Greece.
