Beaton learned the basics of photography from his nanny. She had a Kodak 3A camera that was great for learning. He practiced by having his mother and sisters sit for him. Later, he used different tools like a Box Brownie. He also used a smaller camera called a Rolleiflex.

Beaton did not focus on being a technical expert. Instead, he looked for the perfect moment to press the shutter. He wanted to stage a scene that felt very special.

He was born on January 14, 1904, in north London. His father, Ernest, was a timber merchant. His mother was named Esther. Beaton went to school at Heath Mount and St Cyprian's. At St Cyprian's, people noticed his talent for singing. He later studied history, art, and architecture at Cambridge. He left the university in 1925 without a degree. He worked in a timber business before becoming a full-time artist.

Beaton became a famous photographer for magazines like Vogue.

He took many portraits of the British Royal Family. He photographed Princess Margaret for her 21st birthday in 1951. He also took photos of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. During World War II, he worked for the Ministry of Information. He took pictures of the damage caused by the German Blitz. One famous photo showed a three-year-old girl named Eileen Dunne in a hospital. This image helped people in America see the suffering in Britain.

Beaton's work changed how people saw style and art. He helped create the sophisticated look of the 1930s. Many other photographers were influenced by his style. For example, David Bailey was influenced by him in the 1960s. Beaton also wrote many diaries about his life and the people he met. He lived in a large home called Reddish House in Wiltshire.
